1950s Style

Accessoires, Hüte, Frisuren und Schuhe der 1950er
Accessoires, Hats, Hairdos and Shoes of the 1950s

During the preparations for a there party, I noticed that I knew what the overall style of the time looked like - that is, dress, hairdo and accessories seen in one picture - but if i saw any one item by itself, I couldn't place it. Were those shoes in my favourite vintage shop 1920s or 1930s? Was that handbag appropriate for 1950s dress? I don't want to go through all my period fashion magazines every time, so I decided to make this compliation. I hope it helps you, too.

Any gaps or imbalances in the compilation are due to gaps in my collection. You're welcome to remedy that by sending me pictures - but not trolled stuff, please!

There's so many different kinds of hats that I can't make out a trend. Various kinds of berets, though.
More and more high-heel sandals. Pumps look pretty modern; the heels tend to be cone type.
Many trapezoid handbags with single underarm straps. Evening gloves are still long, often worn with bracelets over them. Actually, big bracelets seem to be a feature all through 1950s.
There's thin and wide and middling belts, most often in the colour of the dress or even made of the same fabric.

Two of those triangular belt buckles - and #2 is very similar, just more rounded.

Some of thoes pumps seem to have small platforms.
Hardly any clutches anymore. Lots of shoulder straps.

I've just noticed how prominent the earrings are. Went back through the 40s and 30s to check whether this is new. Earrings are indeed bigger now, perhaps more frequent - but mainly I didn't notice earrings earlier because ears used to be covered by hair.

Heels are definitely becoming thinner. Notice the first proper ballerinas, two examples of them, one seems to be golden.

The magazine makers didn't seems to consider hallux valgus an aesthetic problem.

Many long, oblong clutch purses.

The earring in the last piclooks like something my garndmother had: Multicoloured plastic pearls with brass pins through them, arranged in a cluster. Down there with the gloves is the bracelet to go with it.

The last pic is the top of an umbrella. Very long and slim.

The miltstrand pearl bracelets often look like necklaces twisted into multiple loops until they fit the arm.
