Jupe / Jupon

Fr: skirt.

The underskirt or petticoat which was, other than normal petticoats, not an item of underclothing. As the robe was, during most of the century, open in front, the jupe could be seen an therefore had to be as splendid as the robe.

The jupe was normally made of the same fabric as the robe, but there are also examples of jupes in colours contrasting that of the robe, and of quilted jupes.

Together with a caraco or casaquin, the jupe made an everyday outfit for the working classes.
