Velvet Cape s1899_3.gif ----------- This smart little cape is another of our coupon patterns. It is suitable to be made up in velvet, silk, lace over coloured silk, or fine cloth, or even in the same material as the dress with which it is worn. In diagram No.75 the pattern of entire cape is shown laid on mantle velvet, which is 32 inches wide; this will cut it without joins, except up the centre of back. There is a dart on each shoulder, which should not be cut or sewn until the cape is tried on; it is best to tack it first in case any alteration in the position of the dart is needed. The two smallest pieces of pattern in diagram are for the back of collar, the two next size pieces for front of same; these should be lined with double canvas before they are joined up, then the facing also of the velvet should be joined up and set inside the collar, the two edges being neatly slip-stitched together. The edges of cape should be turned up over canvas, and, unless a very thick velvet is used, it will be better if made up over muslin; then the silk lining is sewn in, and the inside edge is finished with a pinked-out frill of silk. The pointed collet shown in diagram No.76 may be of lace or broche; it should be joined up the back, and slip-stitched to the outside of the cape. Many lace collets suitable for this purpose can now be bought in black, cream, and white, shaped and made up complete ready to sew on the cape. The inside of collar is finished with a very full pleating of lace; a waterfall of lace is also carried down the front of cape. Materials required: 2 1/4 yards of velvet 32 inches wide, 6 yards of silk, 6 yards of lace for pleating and waterfall, 1 yard 20 inches wide for collet. ------ brought to you by La Couturière Parisienne (webmistress @marquise.de) http://www.marquise.de and given as a Pattern Exchange item by Valerie.
